Emergency Lighting Maintenance & Installation

Being able to evacuate safely during a power outage is a legal requirement. We design, install, inspect and maintain complete emergency lighting and escape route signage installations in accordance with NEN-EN 1838, NEN-EN 50172, NEN 1010 and NEN 6088. Including function tests, duration tests and maintaining your mandatory log book.

In the event of a power failure or fire, everyone must be able to leave your building safely. That is why the Dutch Building Decree and the Working Conditions Decree (article 3.7) require emergency lighting and escape route signage in virtually every commercial property, school, hospitality venue, healthcare institution and public space. AM Security & Process Monitoring designs, installs, inspects and maintains complete emergency lighting installations that comply with NEN-EN 1838 (photometric requirements), NEN-EN 50172 / NEN-EN-IEC 62034 (maintenance and testing), NEN 1010 (installation regulations) and NEN 6088 (escape route pictograms).

Our technicians perform periodic inspections: monthly function tests, annual duration tests of at least 1 hour and periodic replacement of luminaires, battery packs and pictograms. All measurements and findings are recorded in a digital log book — a legal requirement that must be presentable to the fire brigade or labour inspector on demand.

For new construction, renovation or expansion we provide a lighting calculation and design in accordance with NEN-EN 1838. We supply energy-efficient LED luminaires with central or decentralised power (self-testing luminaires with integrated battery or a central battery system / CBS). This ensures a safe escape route and lower maintenance costs in the long term.

Frequently asked questions about emergency lighting

Is emergency lighting mandatory in my commercial premises?

Yes. The Dutch Building Decree and Working Conditions Decree article 3.7 require emergency lighting and escape route signage in virtually every building where danger may arise from failure of the normal lighting. AM Security & Process Monitoring assesses whether your situation meets the standards and corrects any deficiencies.

How often must emergency lighting be tested?

According to NEN-EN 50172 you must perform a brief monthly function test and an annual duration test of at least 1 hour (the time the luminaire must remain lit after a power failure). We carry out these tests for you, replace defective components and document everything in your digital maintenance log book.

What is the difference between emergency lighting and escape route lighting?

Escape route lighting illuminates the escape routes themselves. Escape route signage consists of illuminated pictograms (NEN 6088) indicating direction. Anti-panic lighting illuminates large open areas. Emergency lighting is the overarching term — all these types fall under NEN-EN 1838.

How long do emergency lighting batteries last?

The battery packs in emergency lighting luminaires have an average lifespan of 4 to 5 years. During the annual duration test we determine whether the battery still delivers the full 1 hour (or longer, depending on the application). Timely replacement prevents your installation from failing inspection.

Does AM Security also handle installation for new construction or renovation?

Yes. We provide a lighting calculation and design in accordance with NEN-EN 1838, supply LED luminaires (self-testing or with central battery system) and carry out the complete installation per NEN 1010. After completion we can take over the maintenance immediately if desired.
